Creating a Coastal Inspired Bedroom

Often, we naturally turn to our bedrooms to be a place of respite and peace and it’s wonderful to have a special place to escape the stress of the day and the outside world, if even for 10 minutes.

It’s natural to want our bedrooms to flow easily and effortlessly, just as life does on the coast, and creating this same feeling in a bedroom is a wonderful way to give yourself that much-needed space, whether you prefer something brightly colored….

or something more subdued….

When designing a coastal space for a client, I typically begin with a palette of both color and texture that is truly reflective of the coastal feel and the client.   The coastal areas are rich with colors like blue, green, creme, grey and even yellow and orange, as well as textures like sand, sea grass, reeds and driftwood. Coastal interiors are hands-down my favorite interiors to design as there is such a wide variety of elements, colors and textures available to re-imagine and infuse into the home!

Coastal-inspired spaces are light and airy and evoke an effortless, care-free feeling whether they are casual or formal, so I keep the eye moving in the space by using glass-topped tables, furniture with legs and see-through backs and accessories like mirrors and reflective surfaces.

Using stripes is another way to keep the eye moving and infuse a space with a familiar coastal design element.  Do you notice how they also make this smaller space look larger by drawing the eye up and into the space?

And, although the stripes are subtle here and take a backseat to the fun element of the hanging beds, the idea is the same!

So what do you think?  Do you enjoy coastal-inspired bedroom and would you choose this for your own?
