Jamie Durie Indoor / Outdoor Rooms

Spring is upon us!   Have you felt a change toward warmer, sunnier Spring weather recently?  This is hands-down one of my favorite times of the year, because here in California, we really begin to enjoy our indoor / outdoor living spaces. One of the outdoor room designers I look to from time to time is Jamie Durie, and you’ll see why once you see these pictures of his own indoor/ outdoor living space at his Los Angeles home.

This is what his backyard looked like prior to his makeover

A typical mid-century home in the hills of LA

A little drab and unwelcoming, however you can see the potential, and that’s the first place I begin when looking at an outdoor space any client wants to connect to their interior space:  potential.  I see it through a different set of eyes.  The space we have to work with tells me what we can do with it and how I’ll be able to create a flowing, cohesive design between the inside and outside spaces.

Jamie gave it his special touch, making it full of vibrant color and just waiting to help people create happy memories!  He entertains quite a bit, as you can see by the many beautiful, useful spaces he created to accommodate friends and family.  It’s always a good idea to give thought to how the space will be used because the end goal is always beautiful usable space.

After eating, you could lie lazily in the sun in this outdoor living area

His special touches include using a variety of textures and colors that all blend and flow seamlessly, while still standing out as special and individual.  Using only one texture can make a space one dimensional, while varying the textures in a space adds dimension and interest.

The dining pavilion also has cool, shady seating near beautiful, mature trees

Just one of the many places to enjoy in this beautiful backyard creation

In addition to a seamless flow and connection to one another, one of the most important features of indoor / outdoor living spaces is easy access.

How about you?  What features would you enjoy in an outdoor area such as this?  Here’s looking forward to helping you design your dreams in your indoor / outdoor spaces this Spring!
