Design and Decor Trends for 2013

Well, somehow it’s now almost the end of March 2013!  The beginning of the year always goes by so quickly for us, particularly with so many positive changes this year in our business.  Earlier this year, I flew to the East Coast to work with an amazing group of fellow business owners and this month, I attended the Unstoppable Gala at the Beverly Wilshire, to help support a charity devoted to educating women in Africa, which was just an amazing experience.  Bob Proctor and Jack Canfield hosted and our special guest was Oprah’s favorite guest, Dr Tererai Trent.  If that wasn’t enough excitement,  I just found out that HGTV will be on-site at the next chemo room renovation we’re participating in later this Spring!

So we are preparing for that and welcoming my new intern assistant, Madona, all at the same time!  I am so happy to have her as part of the Cavanaugh Design Group team and am looking forward to helping her learn the business and infuse our client’s projects with her wonderful design ideas! Recently she’s been to  market at the Laguna Design Center, sourcing and learning about all of the wonderful new products that were introduced at High Point back in October 2012. She’s also helping our client projects by sourcing and space planning and I’m happy she’s on-board!

As I’ve blogged about before, 2013 is another trend-setting year in the interior design world. In addition to graphic patterns, Emerald Green and the return of brass and brass tones, we’ll see a few other trends emerging this year in home decor and home design.  While things like the color green, graphic patterns and brass are all things we can apply and bring into our homes, other trends do exist, like a return to an elegant, graceful way of designing our interiors.  I think we’ll see this in print fabrics and furniture with more curves and less use of straight-lined pieces. I’m not saying they will disappear altogether, just take a backseat to some of the more elegant pieces.

We will also see the continued use of grass, sisal, wood and natural textures, along with animal influences, like python and zebra.  Combining elements like texture and color with different materials, like glass and wood or metal,  creates a varied and interesting palette and gives you a balanced room.

I actually like the use of a little python accent in a coastal home, as an unexpected element. Can you see how this python pillow might spice up the room in the above picture and elevate the design, when combined with a different cocktail table?  By changing just two elements, you can move toward a different design.

Along with Emerald Green, python, brass tones and graphic prints, we should also continue to see black and white used for emphasis in home decor in 2013.  Many people like black and white but are afraid to use it for fear of it being too strong and too stark or vivid in their own spaces.  You can actually achieve a very clean look with these two colors and can use them as much or as little as you want.  The more you combine them, the stronger the contrast and thus, the more visual and emotional impact they have in your home.

Use of whimsical numbered plates against a more formal wall covering, mixed into an informal kitchen nook definitely gives this space visual interest.  Notice the python on the chair seats and the use of graphic pattern on both the wall and pillows, but the eye has a resting spot with the white wall and ceiling, so the room as a whole doesn’t read as being too busy.  The nook is a terrific mix of contemporary against traditional.

Outdoor living areas are no exception to the interior design trends of 2013! I have always loved the use of black and white contrast for a more elegant indoor|outdoor living space…

However you can dress it down, as well, based on the style of furniture and accessories you use.
