Small Kitchen Ideas and Solutions
Small kitchens can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, a smaller kitchen can be an easier and more efficient space in which to work, however if you are a chef and enjoy kitchen gadgets for cooking, baking and entertaining, you may have issue with storage and useful workspace.
I believe that a small space can be a luxurious space, with all of the amenities and beauty of their larger counterparts! My free article here on the blog with 20 Tips to Create More Space in a Smaller Home may be helpful to you for increasing the space anywhere in your home, and here are a few more helpful ways to increase the storage and workspace beautifully in your small kitchen.
A cook top or range allows for storage below, where a traditional stove would normally take up this valuable space.
A prep area to either side of your cooking or washing area is extremely helpful, not only because of it’s close proximity to your cooking area but because of its added storage area for recipes, cooking oils, kitchen gadgets, etc. This area is also great for creating a little visual interest with a vignette, as with these glass pasta jars and silver serving pieces.
I am a huge fan of deep under-cabinet storage and using every inch of it!
This can be incorporated into the kitchen island, as well, using other materials like woven slide-out bins or metal drawers. It’s an easy way to add visual interest and texture, while creating more useful space.
Bulky items like TV and serving trays can also be stored neatly below a kitchen island.
I love this idea for those moments when you need a towel for spills and sticky fingers! Incorporating it close to the work area where you’ll need it most is a very efficient use of space and it saves counter space, as well.
Spices, sauces and oils are neatly stored, won’t tip over and are easily accessible with a pull out spice shelf, either below the counter…
Or at eye-level, above it
If the space in your kitchen doesn’t allow for pull-out cabinets, creating a hidden space behind sliding panels is a fantastic way to do the same thing. Further finishing the sliding door with the surrounding materials will help it visually appear to be part of the wall and add an open feeling.
I hope you’ve found these ideas helpful for creating a smaller kitchen you love and can work in any way you desire. Let us know what you think and what works well for you in your kitchens!
