Creating a Focal Point with Bookcases

Bookcases are a beautiful, functional way to add a focal point to any space, large or small. Combining similar elements with different textures creates visual interest.

I frequently encounter homeowners who are afraid of color in large amounts, so integrating color onto the back of the bookcase is a safe alternative.

This focal point wouldn’t be the same and the homeowners pieces wouldn’t show as well without the pop of bright blue.

Wall covering, such as sea grass wallpaper or a print wallpaper, also works well to create visual interest behind the display pieces.  However, it can also detract from the pieces and easily become too busy, so placing simple, un-patterned pieces on the shelves usually is best.

Accessorizing a bookcase is all about editing, editing, editing!  I am a proponent of simple accessorizing.  Leave negative space for the eye to rest as it takes in the display while creating individual focal points or groupings.

Personally, I’m a collector.  I enjoy collecting pieces on our travels and from interesting shops and throughout the years, I have purchased many pieces I love.  Resisting the urge to display every single piece is difficult even for me because I love them all, however this would only clutter my shelves and detract from the flow I am working to create.

Working to strike a balance on your bookshelves can take some work. Stick with it and see what kind of focal point you can create in your space. It will be worth it!
