3 Ways to Make a Design Statement in Your Home

Winter is in full-swing and we are likely spending more time in our homes. This is the time of year when we realize all of those little things that are bothering us about our rooms and we begin hatching a plan to change them! Trust me, more people than you know go through this and many times there’s a relatively easy fix.  So here are three easy ways to finally make a statement in your home, while adding a little zip and ultimately, giving yourself a home that you really enjoy spending time in.

Add a little, or a lot, of unexpected color. Yes, we hear this in all the design magazines and on the blogs…because there’s something to it!  Depending on your tolerance for color, try adding it in an unexpected space, like the closet …

Change one of your light fixtures.  There are so many pretty fixtures readily available at so many different price points now, it is very tempting to pick one out for every room!

First and foremost, make sure the style and size are right for your particular area.  How do you choose the right size light fixture?  As with many aspects of design, everything is relative to each other.  For example, the general rule of thumb for a fixture over a dining table is to choose a fixture approximately half of the width of the table.  So, if you have a 60 inch round dining table, a fixture that is approximately 28 to 30 inches would be appropriate.

Update what you already own.  Do your photos look dated because the mattes and frames are from 1990?  Consider updating them to a color and style that’s more in line with the current trends or even a more classic look.  Personally, I prefer a unified look through the use of similar matte colors and frames.
