3 Ways to Design a Small Space

I love looking at smaller spaces as an opportunity rather than a problem, as they are an amazing opportunity to use every inch of space wisely!  Here are three ways to design a small space and make the most of what you have.

Creating zones creates more function, so prior to embarking on a design, consider which areas of the room will function in what capacity and divide the room up into those zones.  Use elements like color and texture to help define each area within the space and because storage is typically a primary concern in a smaller space, think about designating one zone as a long-term storage zone.

Although this space is on the larger side, the idea of creating zones is still the same.

Instead of dissecting the wall just above the top of the window line, hang drapery just below the ceiling to draw the eye upward. This creates the illusion of height and space, as it keeps the eye moving.

Traditional cabinets tend to visually close off a space, unless they have glass or clear door fronts.  Use open shelving in small kitchens to visually open up the space.  This will also push the issue of organizing your dishes and kitchenware and perhaps give you that excuse you’ve wanted to find new ones, or just do something different with what you have.

I enjoy accessorizing these not only with the usual things you’d see in on a kitchen shelf, like dishes and glasses, but also with a bit of the unusual and unexpected like flowers, topiaries and small art.
